On Thursday 27th November 2014 twelve of us from Hereford Round Table spread our wings and crossed the water to visit some of our International colleagues in France. As well as hopefully being a great road trip this event should see us raise £5,000 for our local Table, which we will as always give away to local charities and good causes.
The plan was that we will drive six Mini’s, loaned to us by our local Cotswold Mini dealership and sporting the logos of our individual sponsors, to visit six French Round Tables from the north-eastern tip down to mid-south. When we arrived at each Table we delivered a small gift from home, a hamper containing local products from Herefordshire.
Our journey began at midday on Thursday 27th November when we left Cotswold Mini in Hereford bound for Folkestone for the Eurotunnel.
We arrived in Calais on time and hit the road towards our first overnight stop in Arras.
During a lively evening with the Tables from Arras and Lille we presented them with gifts including Herefordshire produce from Country Flavours and copies of the Hereford Times.
We also visited the 1914 – 1918 War Memorial and graves at Arras.
On Friday morning we set off in the direction of Reims, with The Great British Florist car leading the pack!
One of our criteria is to take in some of the beautiful French scenery throughout our various journeys so we avoided the main motorways and A-roads and stuck to the smaller D-roads where possible.
We arrived in Reims during the early afternoon when we met with fellow Tablers from Reims and Epernay for an evening of socialising and bonding.
Saturday morning saw us head south to Dijon, again following the minor routes for approximately 4 hours, before we arrived at our final visit, to be welcomed and hosted by two Round Tables from Dijon to forge more friendships for the future.
On Sunday 30th we prepared ourselves for the long return journey, heading north for Calais, crossing the English Channel again, then turning west for home, aiming to be back in Hereford by 8pm.
Not only did we raise money for local good causes, we also raised the profile of Herefordshire and our fantastic Herefordshire producers within France. And we had a great weekend!
The individual Round Table members paid for all the expenses (fuel, Eurotunnel, hotels, food and drink, gifts etc) themselves. This ensures that 100% of the sponsorship money will go directly to local good causes.
